Lost That Lovin’ Feeling: When Birth Control Leads to Sexual Dissatisfaction

Husband wonders where his wife’s sexual sensation has gone. His wife has been on birth control for many years, now it’s affecting her. Can something be done to fix the problem?
Case #: 1197
Concern:

I am a proud father of two boys. My first son was planned; my second, a surprise. When my second son was born, my wife was on birth control. According to our physician, she had about a 1 percent chance of getting pregnant. And with those odds, we hit the birth-control lotto. And while I don’t regret my second child, I do regret my wife’s excessive birth control use. It seems that after so many years on the pill, my wife complains of vaginal sensitivity. What happened?
Discussion:

Birth control can sometimes affect woman similar to the way childbirth can. And to my knowledge, your wife may be experiencing the hormonal side effects similar to childbirth. However, the solution remains the same, one not difficult to implement.
Low Stimulation, High Prolactin

Birth control interferes with sexual sensation because of the unusual side effect of high estrogen and progesterone levels that raise prolactin, a hormone antithetical to estrogen. After giving birth, the body of a woman experiences higher levels of prolactin that can reduce sexual sensation.
Prolactin stimulates milk letdown of breastfeeding mothers, and it functions as a psychophysical effect too. For example, prolactin decreases the desire for sex, and reduces clitoral and vaginal sensation. And because prolactin works in opposite of estrogen, it reduces estrogen levels. Estrogen, meanwhile, keeps vaginal tissue healthy and hearty with proper blood flow and lubrication. With low estrogen levels, sexual stimulation experiences a reduction.
Rub It on to Rev Her Up

To fix this issue, you must increase your wife’s levels of estrogen. It is considered both generally unsafe and unnecessary to ingest pure estrogen because taking just the hormone has been linked to breast and ovarian cancers. Rather, I’d recommend trying a topical estrogen cream. Estrogen creams naturally administer the hormone to the body, without a systemic effect. These sorts of creams return sensation, lubrication, and tissue tone to the genital region.
Other Estrogens

In conjunction with a topical cream, I’d recommend supplementing her diet with foods rich in phytoestrogens, which act like estrogen for the body but that do not harm the body. For example, certain foods contain phytoestrogen-rich compounds perfect for your wife. By eating more phytoestrogen-rich foods, the estrogen levels in your wife’s body will increase while prolactin levels decrease.
How to Help

I recommend an herbal compound that contains Mexican Wild Yam, an herb rich in phytoestrogen. Maca, meanwhile, contains a natural aphrodisiac and libido enhancer, while Dong Quai—an herb used to regulate female reproductive system for centuries—proves helpful as well. (TRY: Herbal Formula for Clitoral Restoration) I’m sure that by rebalancing your wife’s hormone levels, and reducing the amount of unnecessary hormones, your wife will soon be enjoying sex as much as she used to. Good luck!
